The dam Flaming Gorge ( English Flaming Gorge Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric power station in Daggett County , Utah , USA . It dams the Green River to the artificial lake Flaming Gorge (English Flaming Gorge Reservoir ).
In addition to generating electricity, the dam is also used for flood protection and drinking water supply. Construction of the dam began in 1958. It was completed in 1964. The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.
Barrier structure
The shut-off is an arch dam of concrete with a height of 153 m (502 ft ) above the foundation bed . The top of the wall is at an altitude of 1,843 m (6,047 ft) above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 392 m (1285 ft). The thickness of the dam is 40 m (131 ft) at the base and 8.2 m (27 ft) at the top. The volume of the structure is 753,850 m³ (986,000 cubic yards ).
The dam wall has both a flood relief and a bottom outlet . The flood relief is on the left bank; it consists of a 205 m (675 ft) long tunnel that cuts through the rock. A maximum of 820 m³ / s (28,800 cft / s) can be discharged via the flood discharge, and a maximum of 113 m³ / s (4,000 cft / s) via the bottom outlet.
Reservoir
At the normal storage target of 1841 m (6040 ft), the reservoir extends over an area of around 170 km² (42,020 acres ) and holds 4.67 billion m³ (3.78 million acre-feet ) of water. The reservoir has a length of 146 km (91 miles ).
power plant
The power plant is located at the foot of the dam. The first machine went into operation on September 27, 1963; the last machine followed in February 1964. The installed capacity is 151.95 MW ; it was originally 108 MW. From August 1990 to April 1992 an increase in performance was carried out; the 3 Francis turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 50.65 MW (previously 36 MW). The drop height is 122 m (400 ft).
The average annual generation is around 344.37 (or 500) million kWh .
