The spot Hummingbird ( Leucippus chlorocercus ) is a species of bird in the family of hummingbirds (Trochilidae). The distribution area includes parts of Colombia , Ecuador , Brazil and Peru . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .
features
The spotted hummingbird reaches a body length of 12 cm, with wings 5.8 cm, the tail 4 cm and the back of the beak 1.9 cm. The top and the wing covers are green, with the top of the head and the nape of the head being more bronze in color. The underside is light gray, the throat streaked with metallic green spots. The dark gray-brown under tail-coverts are lined with white. There is a white spot behind the eyes. The tail is green, the lateral control feathers have a dark subterminal band and gray tips.
behavior
They are considered loners and collect insects from the foliage or hover in the various stratification layers in front of smaller flowers to collect nectar. They act territorially and scare away other conspecific species. They are considered to be curious and so it can happen that they briefly buzz around in front of people to check them out.
Vocalizations
Your call sounds like a sharp sik, sik, sik, etc. that doesn't follow any particular pattern. This means that only a leisurely series of single, double or triple beeps can come out. When singing, they usually sit on exposed branches at heights between 2 and 4 meters.
distribution and habitat
At Puerto Nariño they were observed in breeding mood in March. They were spotted quite often on Isla Corea near Leticia . After Brazil, the distribution area of Leticia extends via Feijoal into the state of Amazonas . In Ecuador they occur in the lowlands in the northeast of Ecuador. Here they are common along the Río Napo to Puerto Misahuallí . In Peru they occur in relatively dry scrub and on the edges of dry forests in the northeast of the country. Here they are present at heights below 800 meters.
Etymology and history of research
John Gould described the spotted hummingbird under its current name Leucippus chlorocercus . The type specimens came from Nauta , as well as from the lower and upper reaches of the Río Ucayali . In 1850 Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte introduced the genus Leucippus a . a. for the cinnamon breast hummingbird. The generic name refers to " Leukippos Λεύκιππος " from Greek mythology . The species name is made up of the Greek words "chloros χλωρός " for "green" and "kerkos κερκος " for "tail".
