history
During the Second World War , Japan occupied what was then Portuguese Timor . During the occupation there was fighting between Mambai from Ainaro, Aileu and Same . While some supported the Japanese, the other group refused to allow the invaders to set up a military post on the sacred ground. The Japanese let the locals fight it out among themselves.
At the end of January 1976 the Indonesian invaders and the East Timorese resistance of FRETILIN fought for control of the important connecting road. It was not until February 23 that the Indonesians were finally able to reach the city of Ainaro.
