The Airport Brasov-Ghimbav , Romanian Aeroportul Internaţional Braşov-Ghimbav , is a former airport in Brasov (Kronstadt) in the southeast of the historic region of Transylvania in Romania . It is located northeast between the cities of Ghimbav (Weidenbach) and Codlea (Zeiden) in the Brașov district , about six kilometers northwest of the district capital Brașov.

The area, which was also used as a military airfield , is currently being expanded into a commercial airport , which is due to open in 2020.

The airport is also a location for the aviation industry. The Romanian company Întreprinderea Aeronautică Română (IAR) was founded in Brașov as early as 1925 and at the beginning of the 2010s, Airbus settled here with plants from two business areas ( Airbus Helicopters , Premium Aerotec ).

history

In the years 1925 to 1927, today's airport was built as a works airfield for the IAR company and as a military airfield for the Romanian Air Force . Among other things, the IAR-80 and 81 fighters were built here.

During the Second World War, the headquarters of the 1st Romanian bomber squadron and the IV and V bomber groups were temporarily located in Ghimbav.

The airfield was also used by the German Air Force to train Romanian fighter pilots (Kronstadt hunting school) and flak personnel (training staff for Romanian flak) . In the course of the war, especially non-flying units of the Luftwaffe were stationed here. IAR installed a Messerschmitt Bf 109 under license.

There was no paved runway during the war. There was only a paved apron in front of two large and four smaller hangars in the military area in the northwest, and three IAR halls were located in the southwest.

In April and May 1944, Brașov and its airfield were twice the target of bombing attacks by the Eighth Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces .

At the end of the Cold War, the 58th Helicopter Regiment was stationed here. Its 1st and only squadron was equipped with IAR-316 mounted on the field at IAR . In 1995, the " Henri Coandă " Air Force Academy was founded in the city center of Brașov . The military use of the airfield itself ended at the beginning of the 21st century; IAK-52 training planes were last here until the end of 2003 .

The starting shot for the expansion to a commercial airport took place in 2005 and the official start of construction took place in 2008 by the general contractor Intelcan. The first construction phase was the construction of the runway in 2013/14. After a break, further contracts were awarded in 2018 as well as the tender for the construction of the passenger terminal. The 2.8-kilometer runway has been completed.

The construction of nine airport buildings for around 34 million lei (approx. 7 million euros) should start in May 2019 and should be completed in around eight months. Due to discrepancies in the award for the construction of the airport terminal of the same Sibiu construction company for around 40 million euros, the construction of this has been postponed.

After the Brașov County Council had signed a construction contract worth 145.5 million lei (approx. 30 million euros), construction work at the airport was resumed at the beginning of 2020, with the aim of being able to go into operation in early 2021.
