The El Trompillo Airport is the older of the two airports and downtown more of Santa Cruz de la Sierra , the largest city in Bolivia .

The airport was founded in 1920 under the name "Capitán Horacio Vásquez". When there was a need to enlarge the airport in the 1970s, but it could not be expanded because the city had grown around it, the new Viru Viru Airport was built 15 km north of the city , which replaced El Trompillo in 1984 . Nevertheless, a few flights to El Trompillo have been and are still being offered, albeit with a downward trend (as of 2015, only the airline TAM , which belongs to the Bolivian air force, is still active).

The airport is also used for military purposes.
