The Copacabana Airport is the airport of Copacabana , a town in the department of La Paz in the west of Bolivia . The airport is 2.5 km south-south-west of the city, the airfield runs north-east-south-west and is surrounded by mountains on all sides except the sea side in the south-west.

Due to the height of about 3835 m above sea level, there are increased requirements for use. The airport has a relatively long runway and can still only be approached by relatively small aircraft.

history

The airport opened on July 11, 2018, and construction cost 45.3 million bolivianos. Due to its location on Lake Titicaca , Copacabana is an important center of Bolivian tourism. This is to be strengthened with the opening of the airport. The aim is to offer flight connections to El Alto airport , as the journey to La Paz overland takes a relatively long time due to the laborious crossing of the road from Tiquina by boat because there is no bridge. Some future flights to Peruvian cities are also considered possible. However, the airport has not been used since its inception, it is closed and there are currently no concrete plans to offer commercial flights to Copacabana.

The airport was named after Francisco Tito Yupanqui , a descendant of the Inca who was Christianized by the Spaniards and who became known for his wood carvings. His most famous work is the Virgin of Copacabana , a statue of the Virgin Mary that stands in the pilgrimage church of Copacabana and is venerated as the patron saint of Lake Titicaca.
