The airport Chimoré ( Spanish : Aeropuerto Internacional de Chimoré ) is the airport of Chimoré in the lowlands of the department of Cochabamba in the center of Bolivia .
The airport is just one kilometer northeast of the city center of Chimoré, a small town with a little over 6000 inhabitants (2012). The runway runs north-south and has a length of 4000 m and is thus significantly longer than that of the much more important airports of Santa Cruz de la Sierra or Cochabamba .
Construction and use
The airport was originally built as a military base. From here, Bolivian and American special forces fought against drug gangs. In 2006 the newly elected President Evo Morales ended cooperation with the USA. The base should be used for civil purposes.
The renovation of the airport cost $ 34.5 million and took four years. It was inaugurated on October 17, 2015 and has been one of the largest and most modern airports in Bolivia ever since. It extends over 240 hectares and has a 5100 m² terminal building.
However, the airport has hardly been used since its completion. At times there were some commercial flights, these were operated by the state airline Boliviana de Aviación to and from Cochabamba airport with an often only half full Bombardier CRJ200 . At the moment (2019), however, there is no longer any commercial air traffic. Only a few flight schools are active, agricultural flights are carried out and the Bolivian army has a base at Chimoré airport, among other things for combating drugs.
Heavy load transports 2018
In June and July 2018, an Antonov An-225 transported twelve generators, each weighing 160 t, for a power plant under construction in Entre Ríos from Iquique in Chile to Chimoré. Twelve flights were carried out in each direction.
