The Warsaw-Modlin Airport ( IATA : WMI ; ICAO : EPMO ) is a Polish commercial airport about 33 km northwest of the capital Warsaw . It is mainly used by low-cost airlines.

history

A modern new civil airfield has been built on the site of the former Modlin military airfield . It is located northwest of Warsaw and north of Modlin, a village in the Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki municipality and is of interest to low-cost airlines such as the Irish Ryanair or the Hungarian Wizz Air . The ULC ( Urząd Lotnictwa Cywilnego ) aviation authority issued preliminary approval for this at the end of October 2006. To build and operate the airport, the Polish airport administration PLL , the military assets agency AMW , the administration of the Masovian Voivodeship and the city of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki want to found the company Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin . PLL, AMW and Voivodeship Administration are to each hold 31% of the shares, the Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki municipality 5%. The voivodeship administration brings in its capital in the form of cash, the Office for Military Assets in the form of land. The airport opened on July 17, 2012 after extensive construction work. The terminal was designed by Kuryłowicz & Associates .

On December 23, 2012, due to structural defects, part of the runway was closed by the supervisory authorities, which made it impossible for larger passenger planes to use the airport. Ryanair and Wizz Air relocated their flights to Warsaw Chopin Airport. The repair work was supposed to last until May 31, 2013, but was only completed in early July 2013. Ryanair stayed at Warsaw Chopin Airport until September 29, 2013 and then returned to Modlin; Wizz Air, on the other hand, gave up its base in Modlin entirely and has been operating from Warsaw-Chopin again since then.

Airlines and Destinations

Warsaw Modlin Airport is the second airport in the Polish capital , along with the larger Warsaw Chopin Airport . It is intended to relieve this burden and primarily be used by low-cost airlines .

At the opening in 2012, Wizz Air and Ryanair relocated their flights from Chopin Airport to Modlin. Since 2013, Ryanair is the only remaining airline.

In 2018, Modlin was the sixth largest airport in Poland with 3,080,699 passengers.
