The Santa Monica Municipal Airport ( IATA code : SMO , ICAO code : KSMO ; formerly known as Cloverfield known) is the airport of the Californian city of Santa Monica . It is located on the southern outskirts and protrudes with its northeastern end into the urban area of Los Angeles .

The airport is mainly used by general aviation and as an alternate airport for the neighboring Los Angeles International Airport . However, only smaller machines can land on the single runway due to its short length. In addition, numerous types of aircraft are not allowed to land at the airport for noise protection reasons, as it is located in a densely built-up area.

The Barker Hangar , which is used as an event room, is located on the southern apron . Among other things, the Critics' Choice Television Awards have already been presented here several times .

history

The airport was built after World War I and soon became the headquarters of the Douglas Aircraft Company . The prototype of the Douglas DC-1 took off on its maiden flight here on July 1, 1933 , followed by the DC-2 on May 11, 1934. The prototype of the legendary DC-3 finally took off from Clover Field on December 17, 1935 for its maiden flight. 961 DC-3s were built here (579 civil and 382 military copies), the others in Long Beach and Oklahoma City .

The Douglas C-54 Skymaster was also produced in Santa Monica, as was the Douglas A-20 Havoc / Boston .
