The California State Route 19 runs east of the airport and the tunnel under the runway 12/30. In addition, Interstate 405 and the San Diego Freeway run on a common route south of the airport.

history
In the early 1920s, when aviation emerged in Long Beach, the beach initially served as a landing and take-off runway. In 1923, the Long Beach City Council planned a site for a new airport, the actual construction took place between 1928 and 1930 with the construction of hangars and facilities for the Navy and Navy. The terminal, which was built in 1941 in Art Deco style , is still in use and is now a listed building . In the same year, McDonnell Douglas built a production hall, where models such as DC-3 , DC-8 , DC-9 , DC-10 , MD-80 , MD-90 and MD-11 were manufactured in the later years . In 1997 the company merged with Boeing .
Long Beach Airport experienced an upswing in passenger traffic in 2001 when the low-cost airline JetBlue made the airport its hub on the west coast. The groundbreaking ceremony for a new passenger terminal took place in 2010 .
Economical meaning
The major cargo companies DHL , UPS and FedEx are based in the air freight division .
The largest employer at the airport was the armaments and aircraft manufacturer Boeing , which produced the Boeing 717 until 2006 and the Boeing C-17 until 2015 in the former halls of McDonnell-Douglas in Long Beach. In 2012 Boeing sold a large part of the site. The remaining halls at Long Beach Airport were offered for sale by Boeing in November 2018.

Traffic figures
Despite its rather minor importance in passenger traffic, Long Beach Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world due to the large number of flight movements (274,425 in 2018; see Frankfurt 512,115 in the same year). The airport-based flight schools, private planes, zeppelins and helicopters all contribute to this.

Incidents
- On November 18, 1950, a Lockheed L-049 Constellation of the US American Trans World Airlines (TWA) ( aircraft registration number N86511 ) had to make an emergency landing at Long Beach Airport after two of the four engines failed . The machine only touched down after a good half of the runway length and could no longer be brought to a stop on the slippery runway. The right main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft only came to a standstill after around 430 meters. All 60 inmates survived.
