history
The airfield was built in 1912 as a test site for the SIPE company (Società Italiana Prodotti Esplodenti) . The Italian Air Force , founded in 1923, also used it as a military airfield for smaller reconnaissance aircraft. In 1948 the city of Massa decided to buy the airfield, hence the name Aeroporto Municipale . In the 1960s, regional airlines offered scheduled flights between Massa and Milan , Elba and Cortina d'Ampezzo . In 1962 the new Aeroclub Marina di Massa succeeded the dissolved Avio Club Apuano , and in 1967 the flight school of the new Aero Club began training. The Aero Club has become known over time for the numerous aviation events it hosts. The air rescue service of the Tuscany region, founded in 1986, set up a base for the rescue helicopter Pegaso 3 on the airfield in 1999 , which has also been active at night since 2009.
