ARB 02 system track

The floods were preceded by several days of heavy rain, which started on October 23, when the remaining depth of the Deep Depression ARB 02 came overland in eastern Yemen.

The tropical system ARB 02/2008 ( referred to as Cyclone 03B by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center ) intensified into a tropical depression on October 19, southeast of Salalah , Oman . On October 21, the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center upgraded the system to a Deep Depression . Over the Gulf of Aden, due to dry air and the influence of the mainland in the passage along the north-eastern coast of Somalia , the system lost its strength and was downgraded to a depression.

Rainfall in the Horn of Africa from October 20-27, 2008.

The system caught a few hooks east of the Horn of Africa and then set course for the Gulf of Aden . It then arrived overland in eastern Yemen . The remaining low brought heavy accumulations of precipitation over the coastal region. Usually less than 50mm of rain falls here annually. More rainbands moved in from Saudi Arabia and southern Somalia .

Around 180 people were killed in the storm and more than 20,000 people had to leave their villages. At least nine of the victims in al-Mahra, Ta'izz and Lahij thunderstorm governorates died from lightning strikes .

Thousands of families fled their homes in Hadramaut Governorate alone; many schools were used as emergency shelters, but only ten percent of the internally displaced could be accommodated in these. At least 7,000 people have been left homeless, according to a Yemeni official .

Property damage

The masses of water caused damage to houses and infrastructure. Agricultural land was flooded, so that crops and large numbers of livestock and poultry were lost. Electricity and telephone connections were cut and many homes were damaged by the floods. In the UNESCO World Heritage city of Shibam, the water softened some of the medieval houses made of mud so much that they collapsed. According to the Yemeni government, a total of 3,264 houses in the hardest hit governorates al-Mahra and Hadramaut were destroyed or seriously damaged by the flood waters.

reaction

Hadramaut Governorate was hardest hit by the rains and floods.

The organization of the Islamic Conference declared the situation a "national catastrophe" for Yemen and initiated the raising of funds for the flood victims. The United Arab Emirates have expressed their intention to provide assistance. The government of Yemen announced that it would provide tents and other emergency aid materials that were brought to the scene by transport aircraft from Sanaa . President Ali Abdullah Salih ordered the formation of a commission to coordinate aid measures. However, various residents of the city of Shibam said that the government was providing little support and assistance. “They are gone, and they will not appear here today or 100 years from now,” said one of those affected. The neighboring state of Saudi Arabia provided US $ 100 million in disaster relief.
