The Focke-Wulf GL 22 is a German trainer aircraft from the 1920s.
history
The GL 22 was developed as a further development of the GL 18 according to a corresponding requirement of the German Aviation School (DVS), which operated the only built copy of the GL 18 c and was interested in an improved version for training purposes. As with its predecessor, Focke-Wulf was based on the A 16 a . The fuselage was widened and lengthened by almost two meters; the wing was retained. The knowledge gained with the GL 18 about the installation of the two motors was incorporated into the fact that the two Siemens motors were installed inclined outwards at a 10 ° angle to the longitudinal axis. Corresponding tests had shown that with this arrangement the control flaps of the tail unit in the air flow worked best even after an engine failed. Further distinguishing features were the upturned nose tip and the use of a sprung main landing gear with V-struts and a larger track width.
The first flight tests, it was found that a power reduction of a stall was at the rear of the engines result, which in turn drew an abrupt tipping over the bow by itself. Since this effect had already occurred with the GL 18, the cause was quickly identified and could be corrected by changing the shape of the motor nacelle.
After the testing could be completed without further difficulties, a small series of six GL 22s was launched, four of which were financed by the Reich Ministry of Transport and at least three ( D-1349 , D-1375 and D-1418 ) received their approval in March, May and June 1928 and were delivered to DVS.
