The Focke-Wulf A 40 was a German reconnaissance aircraft produced by Focke-Wulf-Flugzeugbau AG in Bremen . It was later named Fw 40 in the course of the introduction of the abbreviation for the designs of Focke-Wulf .

history

The A 40 was designed by Paul Klages as a further development of the S 39 in competition with the Heinkel He 46 based on a tender for a close-up reconnaissance aircraft . The prototype designed as a stripped high-wing aircraft with rigid landing gear and the serial number 99 was registered as a test center for the Reich Association of the German Aviation Industry in Berlin-Staaken and tested there from January 30, 1933. Since the He 46 had better performance parameters, it stayed with this one copy. The A 40 was then used by the Reichsamt für Flugsicherung and, from 1934, also by its successor, the Reichsamt für Wetterdienst , as a weather aircraft and received the license plate in the same year due to the conversion of the German identification system . She was decommissioned on September 16, 1938. D–1908D–IJEF
