geography

Carved monolith made of Guéret granite in the Forêt de Chabrières

The Forêt de Chabrières, German forest of Chabrières , belongs to the Monts de Guéret and is about 4 kilometers from Guéret. It is divided into two parts - the actual Forêt de Chabrières in the north, which with the Puy de Chiroux reaches a maximum height of 689 meters. In the south, the Forêt Domaniale de Chabrières joins the 685 meter high Les Cimes . A little offset to the southeast follows the Bois de Sainte-Fayre , which is still part of the forest and in turn reaches 662 meters. To the east is the 651 meter high Puy de Gaudy with a Gallic oppidum directly on the summit and another oppidum on its north side. The ridge towers above the gentle valley areas around Guéret, where arable farming is carried out, by 150 to 200 meters.

The D 940 runs through the Forêt de Chabrières from Guéret to Pontarion in a north-south direction.

The following municipalities are part of the Forêt de Chabrières:

Hydrography

The Forêt de Chabrières is only drained by small brooks ( French Ruisseaux ), which flow either west to the catchment area of the Gartempe or east to the Creuse . Most important is the Ruisseau de la Pisciculture , a left tributary of the Creuse that separates the Puy de Gaudy in the north from the Bois de Sainte-Fayre in the south.

geology

The Forêt de Chabrières is geologically underlain by the crystalline basement of the northwestern Massif Central . Upcoming is the 356 million year old sub-carbonic Guéret granite from the Tournaisium in its Chénérailles-Peyrabout facies . The peraluminous cordierite- bearing monzogranite weathered to form large monoliths , some of which were sculpted and around which local myths and legends have entwined. Examples are Pierre Casse-Noisette , Pierre Chabranle , Pierre de la Tribune and Pierre du Trésor . The granite was also quarried in several quarries - the main use was paving stones for Paris .

Worth seeing

The wolves on Guéret granite in the enclosure of the animal park Les loups de Chabrières

In the Forêt de Chabrières, the animal park Les loups de Chabrières (in the Bois de Sainte-Fayre ) has existed since 2001 , where wolves are kept. The animals can move freely in six enclosures up to a maximum of 2 hectares in size. The park is a reference for the protection of the species. There is also an arboretum ( Arboretum de Chabrières ) and an observatory in the Forêt de Chabrières .

ecology

The Forêt de Chabrières is under ecological protection and is classified as ZNIEFF (Zone naturelle d'interêt écologique, faunistique et floristique) of type 2. 1452.5 hectares are under protection, with the exception of the Puy du Maupuy in the north and the Bois de Sainte-Fayre because of their coniferous forest monoculture.

The Forêt de Chabrières has been completely reforested, with mainly Douglas firs and rarer beech trees being planted .

The presence of the single berry ( Paris quadrifolia ), which is protected in the Limousin, is botanically significant , but also the Pyrenean squill ( Scilla lilio-hyacinthus ), woodruff ( Galium odorata ) and fingered lark spur ( Corydalis solida ), which are rare in the Limousin, are worthy of protection. Typical species such as narrow-leaved cottongrass ( Eriophorum angustifolium ) and bulky rush ( Juncus squarrosus ) thrive in isolated boggy locations . When it comes to fauna, the bird life is clearly in the foreground. In addition to wood pigeons that breed in the forest , woodcock , swirl bird (migratory bird) and small woodpecker should be mentioned .

Some of the monoliths and rock labyrinths are now under protection, such as La Graule (or La Grosle ), La Pierre Chabranle , La Pierre de la Tribune , La Pierre du Loup and La Roche à Parrain . They can be easily reached via signposted hiking trails.
