The Monts de Guéret are a modest granite massif in the northwest of the French Massif Central .

etymology

The Monts de Guéret are named after the town of Guéret , which was built just 4 kilometers to the northeast.

geography

The Monts de Gueret are among the most in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine located Monts de la Marche . They tower above the Plateau de la Marche (also in the plural Plateaux de la Marche ), which is a northern continuation of the Plateau du Limousin . The low mountain range of hills rises between the valley of the Gartempe in the west and the valley of the Creuse in the east and dominates Guéret from the west. The Forêt de Chabrières , which adjoins further to the southeast, is also included in the massif .

As shown on the overview map, the Monts de Guéret should actually be extended to the elevations around Saint-Vaury (to the south of Dun-le-Palestel ) in the northwest and even to the Forêt de Blessac near Aubusson in the southeast. In this extended sense, they then have a length extension of at least 50 kilometers.

In the Puy de Chiroux , the Monts de Guéret reach their highest point at 689 meters. Other important surveys are:

  • Les Cimes - 685 meters
  • Maupuy - 683 meters
  • Puy de Gaudy - 649 meters

In terms of landscape geography, the Monts de Guéret are partly Bocage , which is receding before the increasing afforestation.

The area of the Monts de Guéret is shared by 19 municipalities, which are regrouped in the Communauté de communes de Guéret Saint-Vaury and have a total of 28,000 inhabitants. Its center is Guéret with 15,071 inhabitants.

geology

The Monts de Guéret form part of the crystalline basement of the northwestern Massif Central . They are made up in their entirety of Guéret granite , a medium-grain, peraluminous, cordierite- bearing biotite granite . This had separated itself in the Lower Carboniferous ( Tournaisian ) 356 ± 10 million years ago as a huge layer-like, laccolithic plate , which was then pressed out in the further course of the Variscan orogeny to the south-southeast along significant lateral shifts. The deep borehole at Créchat-les-Sibieux , which already encountered the Aubusson migmatite at a depth of 500 meters, confirmed that this is a relatively thin layered body . Four facies of Guéret granite are known, which can also be understood as independent intrusions. In the Monts de Guéret, the Chénérailles-Peyrabout-Monzogranite is pending. The orientation of the massif follows the south-southeast-trending (N 150) Creuse fault system , a right-shifting, staggered, rigid fracture system that was active 340 to 315 million years ago (in the Viseum and Serpukhovian ).
