plot

Early 1990s: Dixie Leonard (Bette Midler) and her long-time show partner Eddie Sparks (James Caan) are to receive an award for their life's work. Assistant Jeff (Arye Gross) is due to meet Dixie for the ceremony, which is to be televised live. Dixie refuses to attend, however, and tells Jeff how she met Eddie and fell out with him. The film consists mostly of flashbacks .

In 1942, during the Second World War, the young, talented Dixie received an offer to appear at Eddie's side in front of soldiers at the front. Although she is well received by the soldiers, Eddie attacks her sharply after her first show. Allegedly, Dixie's humor is inappropriate in his opinion, but the reality is that he's jealous because she stole the show from him. At the urging of Eddie's team, including Dixie's uncle Art (George Segal), who writes the punch lines for Eddie, Dixie agrees to continue working with him.

At an appearance in North Africa, Dixie's husband, who is stationed there, is also among the audience. Soon after, however, he dies. Despite her aversion to Eddie, she continues to perform with him in the United States in order to earn a living for herself and her son. Eddie is married and has three daughters, but treats Dixie's son Danny like his own.

When the Korean War breaks out, Eddie surprisingly announces during a performance on stage that he and Dixie will perform for US soldiers in Korea at Christmas without first letting Dixie know about his plans. Dixie “reciprocates” by announcing that Eddie donated $ 100,000 to the Red Cross. Reluctantly, she travels to Korea with him. On the way to the camp, they meet a group of US soldiers who have been ambushed. Dixie takes care of a wounded soldier, but her help comes too late: he dies on the way to the hospital. At the Christmas party there is a scandal when Art announces to everyone there that Eddie has fired him.

Danny (Christopher Rydell), now a young man, became a soldier like his father. Not least because of this, Dixie agrees to appear at the front at Christmas in Vietnam . On the way to the camp, the artists are warned of an impending attack on the camp, which is why they should be flown out again immediately after the performance. Before their performance, Dixie and Eddie meet Danny, who tells them about the increasing brutality of his comrades. The show begins with the appearance of a dancer who is so harassed by the soldiers that only Eddie's intervention can prevent worse. Dixie begins her performance with cynical comments about the soldiers present before she sings " In My Life ". The camp was attacked with artillery pieces while the scene was still on. Dixie and Eddie can get to safety, but Danny is killed in the attack.

Dixie has never forgiven Eddie for any of this, and there is another heated argument between the two in the cloakroom. Eddie comes on stage alone. However, when he was visibly moved by the events in Vietnam, which were also a hard blow for him, Dixie took the stage again with Eddie.

The lexicon of international films described the film as an "overly long epic" which "could neither convince as a vehicle for Bette Midler's show talents [...] nor in its criticism of the American entertainment business" .
