history

Originally an old Cheyenne settlement consisting of earth houses is said to have been in the area north of today's Fort Yates . According to William Clark and John Ordway , the settlement had long been abandoned when they arrived. They named the abandoned settlement Old Village Cheyen . Even George Grinnell mentioned was therefore abandoned before 1780 before a large chicken pox epidemic a settlement. George Grinnell cites stories from the Teton Lakota.

Fort Yates was founded in 1863 as a military base to monitor the Sioux tribes living there as a Standing Rock Cantonment . In 1873 the BIA's Grand River Agency was established next to the fort. This was founded in 1868 after the Treaty of Fort Laremie , but moved in 1873 to the area of today's Fort Yates, as the place was better suited due to its proximity to the Missouri River . On December 22, 1874, the Grand River Agency was renamed the Standing Rock Agency . In 1878 the fort and settlement were renamed "Fort Yates" in honor of George Yates. In 1881 the Indian agent James McLaughlin was transferred to Fort Yates and entrusted with the management of the agency. During his time as an agent there was the ghost dance movement and the murder of Sitting Bull , which led to the massacre of Wounded Knee . Sitting Bull was originally buried in Fort Yates before his grave was moved to his birthplace in Mobridge , South Dakota in 1953 . In place of the grave there is now a memorial at this place. In 1903 the military camp was abandoned and the stationed troops moved to Fort McKeen. In 1973, the Standing Rock Community College was founded in Fort Yates , one of 34 educational institutions controlled by Indian governments. In 1996 the college was renamed Sitting Bull College to honor the great chief.
