Désiré François Laugée (ca.1883)

Désiré François Laugée (born January 25, 1823 in Maromme , Département Seine-Maritime , † January 24, 1896 in Paris ) was a French genre and history painter .

Live and act

Laugée was the son of the businessman Georges-François Laugée (1787-1865) and his wife Eulalie Léger (1794-1883). In 1825 the family went to Saint-Quentin ( Aisne department ), where Laugée attended the Lycée des Bons Enfants . He then moved to the École des Beaux-Arts (EBA) in Saint-Quentin. At the same time he received - together with Jean-Baptiste Malézieux - private lessons in the studio of Louis Nicolas Lemasle (1788–1876).

With Lemasle's support, Laugée was later able to go to Paris to study at the EBA there; he was mostly a student of François-Édouard Picot . In 1845, Laugée succeeded in being accepted at the major exhibition of the Salon de Paris with his work Un père et son fils . He went on study trips to and through England and Belgium and their impressions often became the basis of his landscapes.

On May 14, 1850, Laugée married in Nauroy - near Saint-Quentin (Aisne) - Céléstine Marie Malézieux (1825–1909) and had five children with her; including Marie Éleonore (1851–1937), Laurence (1852–1941) and Georges Paul (1853–1937).

He settled in Nauroy and also opened his own studio. From this time he was also called "Maître de Nauroy". His sister Caroline Joachim Pierre Malézieux, later brother-in-law, had married five years earlier.

Desiré Francçois Laugée died the day before his 73rd birthday in Paris and was laid to rest in the family crypt on the Cimetière de Passy .

reception

In the beginning, Laugée was overshadowed by his teacher Picot, but he soon found his own style (perhaps through the inspiration of his study trips). With that he partly said goodbye to the romanticized historical subjects and devoted himself more to everyday scenes. At the same time he created several works on behalf of the church for some churches in Paris ( La Trinité , Sainte-Clotilde , Saint-Pierre du Gros Caillou) and Saint-Quentin (Basilica Peter and Paul). In his later work, landscapes à la pleinair dominate .
