François Diederich (2016)

François Diederich (born July 9, 1952 in Ettelbrück , Luxembourg ) is professor at the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry at ETH Zurich .

Life

Diederich studied chemistry from 1971 to 1977 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He then completed his dissertation with Heinz A. Staab at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1979 from Heidelberg University . He succeeded in the first synthesis of Kekulen with HA Staab, a ring made up of 12 benzene rings. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with Orville L. Chapman from 1979 to 1981, he took up a position as a research assistant at the MPI for Medical Research in Heidelberg.

After his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg in 1985, he was appointed to UCLA, where he was appointed Full Professor of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry in 1989. Since 1992 he has been a full professor of organic chemistry at the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry at ETH Zurich. On July 31, 2017, Diederich retired and remains as a research professor at ETH Zurich. In 2019 he was made an honorary member of the Society of German Chemists (GDCh).

Work areas

  • Molecular recognition in chemistry and biology.
  • Modern medicinal chemistry : molecular recognition studies with biological receptors and structure-based design of non-peptide enzyme inhibitors (focus on anti- malarial agents).
  • Supramolecular nanosystems and nanostructured surfaces.
  • Advanced materials based on carbon-rich acetylenic building blocks: new organic super-acceptors and their inter- and intramolecular charge-transfer complexes , optoelectronic materials for electronic circuits, chiral macrocyclic and acyclic allenoacetylenes, amplification and transfer of molecular chirality to the macroscopic level.

The group's work in these areas is fueled by synthetic incentives and makes use of contemporary synthetic and physical-organic methods.
