François Louis Dubois
Louis Dubois , also François Louis Dubois (born September 3, 1726 in Montfaucon JU ( Switzerland ), † February 23, 1766 ) was an Alsatian organ builder of Swiss origin.
life and work
Dubois completed his apprenticeship with Jean-Baptiste Waltrin from Ensisheim , before setting up his own business in 1755 in Ammerschwihr, Alsace , and succeeding Waltrin. Shortly thereafter, he relocated his organ building business to the nearby Kaysersberg . Dubois built and repaired between 1756 and 1766 a. a. Organs in Rouffach , Oberentzen , Hilsenheim , Ammerschwihr and Saverne in the Upper Rhine Baroque style.
His most important works include the large organ of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Wissembourg Alsace , the largest Baroque organ in Alsace and the only surviving organ from Dubois that is based on a 16-foot. Dubois had more than a dozen collaborators on this great work. The organ is also his last opus and was put back into operation in 2012 after extensive restoration work. The restoration work was carried out by the organ building company Kern . Some organ cases go back to Joseph Bergöntzle (Bergäntzel) (1754–1819). Dubois was considered to be Johann Andreas Silbermann's greatest competitor . When Dubois died at the age of 40, his workshop was continued by Jean-Jacques Besançon. Further students were Martin Bergäntzel and Weinbert Bussy.
