Francesco Caruso

Francesco Caruso (* 19th September 1940 in Naples ) is an Italian and a diplomat in retirement .

Education

In 1962 he graduated from the University of Naples with a degree in political science .

Life

From 1962 to 1963 he completed a postgraduate course at the College of Europe in Bruges . From 1963 to 1968 he was an EU official at the European Commission in Brussels . In 1968 he joined the Foreign Service of the Republic of Italy where he was employed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1969 to 1972. From 1972 to 1975 he was employed at the embassy in Paris .

From 1975 to 1977 he was consul in South Africa .

In 1977 he was the chief of staff of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1980 to 1984 he was Legation Councilor to the Italian Mission next to the European Commission and to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

From 1984 to 1986 he was chargé d'affaires in Santiago de Chile .

From 1986 to 1987 he was again head of the office of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1987 to 1988 he was a delegate to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 1988 he was appointed Ministre plénipotentiaire . From 1989 to 1992 he held the post of Advisory Diplomat to the Vice President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy.

From 1992 to 1996 he was ambassador to Tunis .

From 1996 to 2000 he had exequatur as consul general in Paris .

In 2000 he held the post of Advisory Diplomat at the Minister of Commerce. From 2000 to 2001 he held the post of Advisory Diplomat at the Minister of Justice. From 2001 to 2002 he was the office manager of the Foreign Minister.

From he was permanent representative of the Italian government next to UNESCO in Paris.

From September 2005 to October 2007 he was ambassador to Stockholm.

On October 1, 2007 he was appointed special advisor to UNESCO to promote the qualification of the Mediterranean region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

He was an honorary professor at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and lectured on Mediterranean politics. From 1990 to 1993 he lectured at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali on the global economy. From 2003 to 2005 he was commissioned by the Coordination and Studies Department of the UNESCO World Heritage Office General Secretariat to find intercultural mediation for the cultural heritage of Israel and Palestina . He is currently head of the Department of Culture at UNESCO .

He was inducted into the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2006.
