Francesco Moraglia
Francesco Moraglia (born May 25, 1953 in Genoa , Italy ) has been Patriarch of Venice since 2012 .
Life
Francesco Moraglia studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Genoa . On June 29, 1977 he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Genoa through Cardinal Giuseppe Siri . He continued the studies continue, acquired in 1979 at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy , the licentiate in theology and in 1981 at the Pontifical Urban University with a dissertation from the field of dogmatic theology on the progressive purification of the soul in the Hl. Catherine of Genoa to Dr. theol. PhD .
Then he was director of the cultural office and diocesan assistant of the Movimento Ecclesiale di Impegno Culturale (MEIC) and lecturer at the seminary in Genoa . He was then Professor of Christology, Anthropology, Sacraments and the History of Religions at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy in Milan and Dean and Professor at the Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose in Genoa.
On December 6, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the bishop of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato . On February 3, 2008, the Archbishop of Genoa, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco , donated him episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Mauro Piacenza , Secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy , and Bassano Staffieri , Bishop Emeritus of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. The ceremonial inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on March 1, 2008. He is President of the Board of Directors of the Foundation that controls the media of the Italian Bishops' Conference and advisor to the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy.
On January 31, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. to the Patriarch of Venice. The inauguration took place on March 25, 2012. As Patriarch of Venice, Moraglia can wear non-liturgical robes in red without being a cardinal. The red biretta has a pompom , as is customary for an (arch) bishop.
