Bassano Staffieri (born September 6, 1931 in Zorlesco, Casalpusterlengo , Province of Lodi , Lombardy ; † July 31, 2018 in La Spezia , Province of La Spezia , Liguria ) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato .

Life

Bassano Staffieri entered the seminary of Lodi and studied philosophy and theology at the Institute "Maria Immaculata and St. Pius X" in Lodi. Archbishop Tarcisio Vincenzo Benedetti ordained him on June 9, 1955 . He was parish vicar in the parish of Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in Lodi. He was deputy director and then director of the youth center and ecclesiastical assistant of the Italian national sports center. At the same time, from 1958 to 1968, he became deputy and ecclesiastical assistant of the diocesan youth of the Catholic Action . From 1968 to 1973 he was rector of the episcopal college .

Bishop Giulio Oggioni appointed him episcopal vicar and diocesan assistant to Catholic Action in 1973 . From 1977 to 1978 he was vicar general in the diocese of Lodi during the terms of the bishops Paolo Magnani and Giacomo Capuzzi . From 1977 to 1987 he was also the first president of the “Center for the Family” (Centro per la Famiglia) and also of the diocesan charity. He was appointed canon of the cathedral chapter and was later archpriest and chairman of the cathedral chapter. On January 12, 1987, the Council of the Italian Bishops 'Conference appointed him Undersecretary of the Italian Bishops' Conference CEI on the proposal of the Presidency .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Carpi on July 11, 1989 . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti on 9 September of the same year in the Cathedral of Lodi; Co- consecrators were Giacomo Capuzzi , Bishop of Lodi , and Camillo Ruini , Auxiliary Bishop in Reggio Emilia-Guastalla . Since 1990 he has been secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Family of the CEI.

On July 10, 1999, John Paul II called him Bishop of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. On December 6, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation. He was vice-president of the Ligurian Bishops' Conference. Until his successor Francesco Moraglia took office on March 1, 2008, he was Apostolic Administrator at the head of the diocese.

He was committed to the beatification of Eduard Focherini , who was beatified on June 15, 2013 in Carpi.
