Alessandro Maggiolini (born July 15, 1931 in Bareggio , Province of Milan , Italy , † November 11, 2008 in Como ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Como .

Life

Alessandro Maggiolini was ordained priest on June 26, 1955 in Milan by Giovanni Battista Montini , who later became Pope Paul VI. He was professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of Milan , later Episcopal Vicar for the university. He was a close confidante of Giovanni Cardinal Colombo .

On April 7, 1983, he was appointed Bishop of the Carpi diocese in Carpi near Modena by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Sebastiano Baggio on May 29 of the same year in the cathedral of Carpi ; Co-consecrators were Artemio Prati , Bishop of Carpi, and Gilberto Baroni , Bishop of Guastalla.

In 1989 John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Como . He was a member of the Editorial Committee of the Catechism of the Catholic Church .

Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation . on December 2, 2006. Maggiolini died of complications from cancer.

Act

Alessandro Maggiolini was seen as a contentious bishop who also publicly expressed his opinion against Rome.

He was a staunch opponent of the commercialization of the figure of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo . "Jesus Christ drove the traders out of the temple, but I must now say that they have returned," he said in an interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica .

Although he thought a dialogue between the organizers of the World Gay Pride and the Catholic Church was not possible, he called for calm for the international gay parade to be held in Rome in the Holy Year 2000.

Regarding the construction of Islamic mosques in Italy, he told the Milan daily Corriere della Sera on January 12, 2007: “Catholics here must have a hard head and a soft heart; instead they often have a heart of stone and a head like chewing gum ”.

Maggiolini was a well-known theologian. He published several books and numerous publications, especially in the last years of his life.
