The Carpi Cathedral (in regional dialect : Dòm ed Chèrp , Italian Duomo di Carpi ; actually Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta ) is a Roman Catholic church in Carpi under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary . It represents the cathedral of the Carpi diocese .

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the diocese in 1979, the Carpi Cathedral was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica . The cathedral is located in Piazza dei Martiri , the Martyrs' Square .

History of the cathedral

The diocese Carpi was on December 1, 1779 by Pope Pius VI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Inter plurimas and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Bologna as a suffragan . On August 22, 1855, the Carpi diocese was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Modena-Nonantola as a suffragan. The diocese has been led by Bishop Francesco Cavina since 2011 . In 2016, 116,920 were baptized among 130,298 residents in the diocese.

Construction work on the cathedral began in 1514. The three-aisled interior reflects the design practice of Baldassare Peruzzi from the Renaissance, adopted from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The building has valuable works of art and furniture, mostly from the 17th century, including paintings by Teodoro Ghisi , Matteo Loves , Luca Ferrari , Giacomo Cavedone and Sante Peranda . The facade was completed in the second half of the 17th century with Baroque lines, the dome, built in 1768, had to be lowered three years later for structural reasons. The construction work could not be completed until the end of the 18th century. In 1791 the cathedral was inaugurated by Francesco Benincasa, the first diocesan bishop. In the 21st century the presbytery was renovated and furnished with new furniture. The marble tombs of the previous bishops are housed in the right aisle.

The worship of the church people is particularly the Madonna della Porta (Ianua Coeli), a work that was removed from the Porta Mantova at the beginning of the 20th century, shortly before its destruction, and brought into the cathedral. The relics of St. Valeriano and St. Bernardino Realino are also worshiped.

It was in this cathedral that Gaetano Maria Cattani (1850), Alessandro Maggiolini (1983) and Douglas Regattieri (2010) received episcopal ordination. The cathedral was damaged in the 2012 earthquake in northern Italy . It could only be handed over to the community of believers in a solemn ceremony on March 25, 2017, led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin , after a thorough renovation . Numerous other cardinals were also present at this festive service. A week later, Pope Francis celebrated the reopening of the cathedral with many thousands of believers.

In 2017, Odoardo Focherini's 100th birthday was also celebrated in the cathedral. The relics of this resistance fighter against the Nazi regime and martyr, who was beatified in 2013, have since been kept in Carpi Cathedral.
