Francisco Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral

Francisco Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral (born June 11, 1843 in Lisbon , † August 11, 1923 ) was a Portuguese military and politician from the final phase of the constitutional monarchy . He was the Portuguese head of government from February 4, 1908 to December 26, 1908 and headed a non-partisan government appointed by King Emanuel II .

Life

Ferreira do Amaral was a member of the Navy, where he achieved the rank of admiral . His father was a military officer and governor of Macau . From 1882 to 1886 he was governor of Angola , then governor of Portuguese India . From 1892 to 1893 he was Minister of the Navy and Overseas Ministry, and in 1893 briefly also Foreign Minister of his country .

Ferreira do Amaral's predecessor in the office of prime minister, João Franco , had tried hard to fight the growing republican tendencies in the country and the general uprising against the monarchy, and ruled authoritarian, with royal decrees, without the involvement of parliament. This policy meant that the Prime Minister and King Charles I became increasingly unpopular with the people. Finally, on February 1, 1908, there was a momentous assassination attempt in which the king and his heir to the throne, Ludwig Philipp, were killed. The new king, Emanuel II , who blamed the authoritarian politics of João Franco for the death of his father and brother, dismissed him immediately after his accession to the throne and appointed Ferreira do Amaral Prime Minister. The king was given the task of calming the heated domestic political situation through a liberal policy. The government led by Ferreira do Amaral was therefore also called the "government of calm" (in Portuguese governo da acalmação ), as it repealed most of the anti-republican laws of João Franco.

After the end of the monarchy and the proclamation of the republic, he joined the Democratic Party (PD) of Afonso Costa .
