Francisco Torres (Jesuit)

Francisco Torres SJ (also: Turrianus ; * around 1504 or 1509 in Herrera , Diocese of Palencia ; † November 8, 1584 in Rome ) was a Spanish Jesuit and Catholic theologian .

Life

After studying at the University of Salamanca , he entered the service of Cardinal Giovanni Salviati in Rome in 1540 . There he edited texts by the Greek church fathers such as Anastasios Sinaites , John of Damascus and Leontius of Byzantium . Pope Pius IV sent him to the third stage of the Council of Trent in 1562 as papal theologian .

In 1567 he joined the Jesuit order and became a professor at the college of the order in Rome . Torres was a prolific writer who took a strictly pro-papal stance on almost all issues.
