Francisco de Lacerda , actually Francisco Inacio de Sousa Pereira Forjaz de Lacerda , (born May 11, 1869 in Ribeira Seca , São Jorge Island , Azores , Portugal ; † July 18, 1934 in Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese composer and conductor.

Live and act

At the age of four he received music lessons from his father. In 1888 he began studying medicine in Porto , which he gave up in order to devote himself to music. In 1891 he moved to Lisbon to study piano at the National Conservatory of Music ( Conservatório Nacional , today ESTC ) until 1895 .

In 1895 he moved to Paris , where he studied at the Conservatoire Paris and later at the Schola Canticum. In 1904 he became director of the Casino de la Baule concert series.

During his stay in Paris, he met numerous important figures in the music world, including Erik Satie , Romain Rolland , Manuel de Falla , Isaac Albéniz and Charles Vidor .

In Nantes he was the leader of his own concert series, in Montreux the Kursaal concerts and in Marseille the great classical concert series.

From 1913 to 1921 he lived again in the Azores, where he composed extensively and devoted himself to the tradition of Azorean music. In 1921 he moved to Lisbon again. There he was an integral part of cultural life, u. a. he promoted chamber music in Portugal and poetic readings. He was also one of the co-founders of the Lisbon Philharmonic.

Between 1925 and 1928 he lived again in France, where he again composed and conducted extensively. In 1928 he returned to Lisbon.

Lacerda died in Lisbon at the age of 65.

In 1991 his own museum was opened in Calheta on the island of São Jorge in his honor.

Among his works is the unusual attempt to transform animal species into music. He composed 36 little songs for a wide variety of animals, e.g. B. for butterflies, elephants, peacocks, birds.

Some of the works he composed put melancholy in the foreground.

With one work Lacerda tried to translate pantomime into music.

Many songs have been provided with text and were sung by well-known Portuguese sopranos.

His most famous piece is " Almourol ", a piece that musically celebrates the fortress of the same name.

The influences of his music are mainly reflected by French composers such as César Franck , Gabriel Fauré , Maurice Ravel and Francis Poulenc .

Other works / pieces are, for example, Tenho tantas Saudades, Dans le clair de lune, Trovas, Epithaphes.
