Franco Superchi (born September 1, 1944 in Allumiere ) is a former Italian football goalkeeper. He was mainly active for AC Florence and Hellas Verona and won the Italian championship with both Fiorentina and his late club AS Roma .
Career
Franco Superchi was born on September 1, 1944 in Allumiere , a small municipality in the province of Rome . His first club was the local amateur club Bettini Quadraro, before he was hired by the small Roman club AS Tevere for the youth department. There the goalkeeper played from 1961 to 1963 in the youth and later from 1963 for two years in the first team, making 23 league games. In the summer of 1965 Superchi was signed by the first division club AC Florence , where he soon became a regular goalkeeper. At the beginning of his time in Florence he was still a substitute goalkeeper behind Enrico Albertosi , so that he only saw the final victory at Coppa Italia 1965/66 against US Catanzaro from the bench. After Albertosi's departure to the US Cagliari in 1968, Franco Superchi finally became the first goalkeeper for Fiorentina . In the 1968/69 season succeeded with Superchi as goalkeeper and players such as midfield director Giancarlo De Sisti or the attackers Amarildo and Luciano Chiarugi winning the Italian football championship. In Serie A , coach Bruno Pesaola's team was in first place with four points ahead of second-placed Juventus Turin after all match days . Franco Superchi played a decisive role in the championship title, he was in his team's goal in all thirty games of the season. However, this triumph could not be repeated in the following years. Franco Superchi played for Fiorentina for twelve years from 1965 to 1976 and made 227 league games during that time. Towards the end of his time in Fiorentine, he and the team reached the final of the Coppa Italia again . In the 1974/75 season , the team trained by Nereo Rocco won the final with Franco Superchi in goal with 3-2 against AC Milan .
In 1976 Franco Superchi changed clubs and joined league rivals Hellas Verona . For the northern Italian club Superchi was in goal from 1976 to 1980 and brought it to a total of 126 league games during this time, where he was an unrestricted regular goalkeeper at Hellas Verona. In each of the first two seasons, midfield positions were achieved and relegation was clearly avoided. The Serie A 1978/79 ended Hellas Verona with goalkeeper Superchi in last place and had to go to Serie B , where the direct resurgence was clearly missed the following year.
In the summer of 1980 Franco Superchi Hellas left Verona again and moved to AS Roma , where he did not get beyond the role of reserve goalkeeper in the following period. Behind Franco Tancredi's second keeper, Superchi was still there when AS Roma won the Italian championship for the second time in the club's history under Nils Liedholm in the 1982/83 season . The team of Paulo Roberto Falcão , Agostino Di Bartolomei and Bruno Conti separated from second-placed Juventus Turin four points . Also in the cup victory with Roma in 1980/81 Tancredi completed the final against Torino Calcio , which AS Roma finally won 4-2 on penalties.
Franco Superchi made only one league game for AS Roma between 1980 and 1984. From 1984 he played for another year with the fourth division club Civitavecchia Calcio before ending his career in 1985 after 23 years in business and at the age of 40.
