Frank-Harald Greß (born July 27, 1935 in Dresden ) is a German organ researcher and author. He was a professor at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . He is considered one of the leading Gottfried Silbermann researchers.

Live and act

Greß received his first music lessons from Günter Metz (Zwickau) and Hans Otto (Dresden), studied organ with Herbert Collum at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden , then musicology, art history and acoustics at the University of Leipzig. Here he completed his organ studies with Robert Köbler . He received his doctorate in Rostock in 1974 and completed his habilitation in Halle (Saale) in 1983.

From 1959 to 1992 he taught at the Music Academy in Dresden, where he received a professorship in 1988. His subjects were music history, instrument studies and acoustics. At the same institute he built up a department for jazz and popular music from 1962, which he headed for over three decades. He was a co-founder and long-term member of the executive committee of the Gottfried Silbermann Society Freiberg e. V.

His research focus is organ building, including the life and work of Gottfried Fritzsche and Gottfried Silbermann. He also worked on the planning of around 50 organs at home and abroad and as a consultant for restorations and reconstructions of historical organs. Greß designed arrangements and scales for numerous new organs, among others in the Kreuzkirche Dresden (1963), in St. Nicolai and St. Johann / Lemgo (1967 and 1970), the city ​​hall in Chemnitz (1976), concert hall "Georg Phillipp Telemann" Magdeburg (1979), concert hall St. Ulrich Church in Halle / Saale (1980), in Naumburg Cathedral (1983), in St. Margrethen / Switzerland (1992), St. Anna / Twistringen (1996), Kotka / Finland (1998 ), Velesovo / Slovenia (2007) and in the Paulinum / Leipzig (2009–2015).
