Frankenbacher Schotter is a nature reserve in the area of ​​the Baden-Württemberg city of Heilbronn and the municipality of Leingarten .

Characteristics

The nature reserve was designated by ordinance of the Stuttgart Regional Council of June 24, 2008 and according to the ordinance on the protected area has a size of 14.4 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 1.273. The CDDA code for the nature reserve is 389593 and corresponds to the WDPA ID .

Location and description

The protected area lies between Leingarten and the Heilbronn district of Frankenbach . It includes the former mining area of ​​the sand and gravel pit "Ingelfinger" including the recultivated and directly adjacent agricultural areas.

The NSG is located in the natural area 125- Kraichgau within the natural main unit 12- Neckar- and Tauber-Gäuplatten and belongs to the 2146 hectare FFH area No. 6820-311 Heuchelberg and eastern Kraichgau .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the protection purpose is to secure and maintain a landscape section characterized by the combination of partial loess walls, still waters, open gravel areas, ruderal areas, woody trees, meadows and fields as a habitat and reproduction area for various, e.g. Some animal species threatened with extinction or endangered, in particular for insect, amphibian, reptile and bird species; as a habitat for rare plant species and as part of the “Natura 2000” network with species that are important across Europe.

It also serves to secure the undisturbed exposure of the Frankenbacher Sande geotope and the loess cover layers above it in a former excavation pit as a unique geological and landscape historical document and research object of supraregional geoscientific and regional significance as well as the last exposed area of ​​ancient to central Pleistocene river deposits and as a significant site of fossils from the period about 870,000 to 400,000 years ago in the central Neckar region. It also serves as a representative reference and demonstration object for education and teaching.

The protection purpose is also the conservation of the wild animal species occurring in the area, the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) and crested newt (Triturus cristatus) according to Annex II of the Habitats Directive.
