The Elsenzer Bruchgraben is a nature reserve in the district of Elsenz in the north-west of Baden-Württemberg . The 19.8 ha area is located between the core towns of Elsenz and Adelshofen in the city of Eppingen in the Heilbronn district . With its wet meadows and fringing structures, it represents the formerly typical Kraichgau landscape along the Elsenz River .

In the north, the Hilsbacher Bruchwiesen nature reserve in the Rhein-Neckar district borders directly .

Geology and structure

Geologically, the Bruchgraben Lakes are located in a valley floor that is filled with Holocene floodplain sediments . To the east of this, the gypsum - Keuper layer of the Lower Keuper comes to the surface on the lower slope , which in the Kraichgau is mostly covered by loess and loess clay sediments. Nassgley or Auengley have formed along the rift . The small-parcel structure of the lakes is due to the fact that the area was characterized by three-field farming and real division until the middle of the 20th century and until 1969 had an alluvial area with even more wet and wet meadows than today.

Animal species

Due to the juxtaposition of various small structures and transitional biotopes, the nature reserve offers a large number of animal and plant species important habitat. In Elsenzer Bruchgraben breed rare, threatened bird species such as Eurasian Hobby , Whitethroat , oriole , kingfisher , warbler , Tableware and teal , Northern Harrier , Red-backed Shrike , Little Owl , Yellow Wagtail , Moorhen , quail and Willow Tit . The Bruchseen with the bordering wet meadows and the semi-open landscape represent a special breeding and feeding habitat , especially for the avifauna . The bordering oat meadows , which are partly covered with fruit trees, show the most species-rich vegetation types of the nature reserve. In the Bruchgrabenaue there are also numerous species of butterflies and dragonflies , such as the banded demoiselle .
