Frankenstrasse (Saxony)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frankenstraße is the name of the old road from Bautzen to Zwickau .

Since the 13th century the street from Bautzen, where it branched off from the Via Regia , via Bischofswerda , Dresden , Freiberg , Oederan , Chemnitz to Zwickau, where it met the Via Imperii , has been known as Frankenstraße. The road played an important role both in the settlement of Saxony and Silesia in the context of the eastern settlement of Franconian settlers, as well as in terms of transporting the rich ore finds in the Ore Mountains (1168 silver ores in Freiberg, from the 12th century tin ores around Graupen and later Altenberg ) and for pilgrims as part of the Way of St. James .

The road was crossed by the Saxon salt roads or Bohemian Steigen , which represented a connection from the Hanseatic cities and the central Central German area in the north and north-west to Bohemia in the south-east, as well as the important pilgrimage route Heiliger Weg .

Today the historical traffic corridor of the Frankenstrasse at the foot of the Ore Mountains is characterized by the federal highway 173 laid out as “Hofer Chaussee” and between Dresden and Bautzen by the federal highway 6 and the Franconia-Saxony-Magistrale of the railway.
