The Invictus Gaming team was actually qualified for the tournament, but the team captain , Su "super" Peng, did not receive a visa for Germany and they had not given any substitute players who could have replaced the captain. Instead of IG, Newbee Young was invited, this team had finished third in the qualifiers in the China region and thus moved up.

Then the group stage starts. Groups of four teams are formed and the first games are played in this group. The games are played using a double knock-out system : team A plays against team B; Team C versus Team D; the winners play against each other. The winner of this duel ends up in the upper bracket. The two teams that have lost their first games compete against each other; the winner plays against the loser of the first game for a place in the upper bracket. The winner also lands in the upper bracket. The losers are sorted into the lower bracket. All games are played in best-of-three mode .

The advantage of the upper bracket is that a defeat is allowed there: The team that lost there is divided into the lower bracket, but if it loses another round in the lower bracket, it is eliminated from the tournament. Teams that start directly in the lower bracket are immediately eliminated from the team if they have lost a round.

Team Secret won the top bracket and OG the bottom. The final, which was held in the best-of-five mode , OG won three to one.
