Franklin Paul Peterson
Franklin Paul Peterson (born August 27, 1930 in Aurora (Illinois) , † September 1, 2000 in Washington, DC ) was an American mathematician who studied algebraic topology .
Live and act
Peterson studied at Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in 1952 and received his doctorate in 1955 from Princeton University with Norman Steenrod ( Generalized cohomotopy groups ). He was then a lecturer at Princeton and was from 1958 Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , with a full professorship from 1965. In 1960 he became a Sloan Research Fellow .
He dealt with cohomology operations and among other things with immersions in differential topology, and worked here and in other areas with Edgar H. Brown . With Brown he also introduced Brown-Peterson cohomologies in 1966.
From 1974 to 1998 he was treasurer of the American Mathematical Society , whose transactions he published from 1966 to 1970. In 1974 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
His PhD students include Ethan Devinatz , Paul Goerss , David J. Anick, and W. Stephen Wilson .
