Frans Kempe

Frans Christoffer Kempe (born March 5, 1847 in Härnösand ; † May 26, 1924 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish industrialist and between 1884 and 1917 CEO of MoDo (predecessor of today's Holmen Group).

Frans Kempe was one of the eleven children of Johan Carl Kempes , his mother was his second wife Fanny (née Franzén). He studied medicine at Uppsala University , where he befriended Theodor Magnus Fries , whose father ( Elias Fries ) herbarium he later saved from being sold abroad. After completing his bachelor's degree , however, he left university to work in the wood industry like his father. In 1884 Frans Kempe became CEO of Mo och Domsjö AB , which he expanded into a major national corporation at the beginning of the 20th century. Kempe was considered a responsible person towards his workers, among whom he was very popular. He invested large sums in the maintenance of the company's forests (his interest in botany lasted a lifetime) and built what was then a unique workers' settlement on the Norrbyskäri . In 1900 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University, and in 1922 he was accepted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .
