Frans de Neve (II) (also: Francisus de Neve (II), Franciscus de Neuff, Francesco della Neve) (* 1632 in Antwerp , † after 1704) was a Flemish painter, draftsman and printmaker.

Life

Frans de Neve (II) was the son of the painter Frans de Neve (I). Frans de Neve the Elder was born in Antwerp in 1606, worked mainly in his hometown and died around 1681. Due to the same name and a similar painting style, numerous paintings were incorrectly assigned.

Frans de Neve (II) was baptized on February 23, 1632 in Antwerp. He is best known for his late baroque religious and mythological scenes and landscapes. The coloring of the oil paintings as well as his portrait art, which is mainly preserved in copperplate engravings , was highly valued by his contemporaries. After an international career in Italy , southern Germany and Austria , where he worked for aristocratic patrons and churches, he returned to his hometown around 1690. There he is mentioned as a member of the Guild of Luke . After 1704 he probably died in Antwerp.

From 1660 to 1670 de Neve was active in Rome and represented in the association of Dutch and Flemish artists "Bentveughels" (feather birds) with the artist name "Bloosaerken". In Rome he lived first with Pieter van Mander, from 1661 to 1662 with Hieronymus Galle and from 1665 to 1666 with Lodewijk Snaijers. In 1661 he received a prestigious commission for the Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj , where he worked with Pietro da Cortona , among others . The Flemish painters Cornelis de Wael and Abraham Brueghel also worked as art dealers in Rome and made significant contributions to Neve's career in Italy. In addition to his paintings, Neve also inherited numerous small-format, signed landscape pictures in copperplate engravings. They were engraved by Rome-based Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi alla Pace. These works were widely used.

He was probably in Naples from 1667 to 1668 . He then went to Germany, where he worked in Augsburg and Munich .

From 1669 to 1689 he painted altarpieces for the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg as well as for the large Benedictine monasteries Kremsmünster , Garsten and Admont . In Bavaria he painted altarpieces for the respective bishop of Passau in 1669 and 1689 . From 1679 to 1681 de Neve worked in Moravia , including for the Liechtenstein Prince Karl Eusebius . He also worked as a restorer and dealer for the prince.
