Franz Xaver Chapel (Unterammergau)
The Franz Xaver Chapel in Scherenau , a district of the Upper Bavarian municipality of Unterammergau , is a church building of the Roman Catholic Church . The chapel is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier . It is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.
location
The chapel stands in the center of Scherenau at the point where the road coming from Unterammergau makes a curve to the west towards the Ammer . The main axis runs roughly in an east-west direction with a deviation of about 20 ° counterclockwise.
history
The chapel was built in the middle of the 18th century, the roof turret bears the year 1752. In 1983 the chapel was renovated and renovated.
Exterior
The chapel consists of a nave with a small choir with apse attached to the west . On the north and south sides of the nave, there are two arched windows with slug panes , the choir has one each. The nave and choir have a shared gable roof , at the east end of which there is a roof turret with an onion helmet .
Interior
The nave had a plastered flat ceiling , the original ceiling fresco by Franz Seraph Zwinck is no longer preserved. The altar shows a picture of the death of St. Francis Xavier. The furnishings also include a copy of the scourged Savior of the Wieskirche from the 18th century, a Lourdes grotto , figures of Saints Sebastian and Leonhard , a Way of the Cross and five wooden panels painted by Franz Seraph Zwinck with the secrets of the Sorrowful Rosary .
The roof skylights hang two bells of bronze . The smaller bell weighs about 50 kg and was cast in Innsbruck in 1796 , the larger bell weighs about 90 kg and was cast in Munich in 1799 .
