Franz Brasser (* around 1520 ; † March 22, 1594 in Lübeck ) was a typist and arithmetic master in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

He was the founder and director of the most successful German school (in contrast to the Latin school , the Katharineum zu Lübeck ) in Lübeck. When the school master guild was founded in 1558, he became one of the two elders and inspector of all German schools in the city. For more than twenty years he was also foreman of the Katharinenkirche .

Franz Brasser is the author of an arithmetic book for merchants with the title Arittmetica edder Rekenboek up alle Koepmannshandling, first printed in 1552 in Lübeck in Middle Low German . It appeared in four editions. At that time, Middle Low German, together with the very closely related Middle Dutch, was the lingua franca of the Hanseatic League between Flanders and the entire Baltic region. Brasser's work was translated into High German and had more than 15 editions in this version by 1710. The Bremen arithmetic master Otto Wesellow translated it into Latin, this translation has also been reprinted several times. In the foreword of the Latin translation, Brasser is emphasized as "Teacher from all of Saxony and the German seaside towns". A total of 44 editions have survived, of which 26 have also been bibliographically proven.

The only authentic portrait of Brasser can be found in the Hamburg edition of Ein nye Rekensboeck from 1594; all portraits in later editions are not authentic.
