Franz Christoph von Khevenhüller
Franz Christoph von Khevenhüller (* February 21, 1588 at Landskron Castle near Villach ; † June 13, 1650 in Baden near Vienna , Lower Austria) was the Austrian Supreme Treasurer, Chamberlain and Privy Councilor under Emperors Matthias and Ferdinand II and an important historiographer of the 17th century.
Life
Khevenhüller was the son of Bartolomäus Khevenhüller , Count of Frankenburg (1539–1613), and Bianka Ludmilla von Thurn and Valsassina . Raised a Protestant, he converted to Catholicism in 1609.
For fourteen years he was ambassador to Spain and in 1623 was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece by King Philip IV . In his work as envoy, he tried to influence the increasingly complicated relationship between the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs.
In 1634 Khevenhüller received permission to use files from the imperial chancellery for a historical treatise. This work, called Annales Ferdinandei, consists of nine folio volumes in the first edition (1640–46) and twelve volumes in the second edition (1721–26) . For today's historical research, the Annales are an important source for the 17th century.
