Life

Franz Seraph Drexler grew up as the son of the businessman Johann Baptist Drexler and Josepha, née Humblinger, in Osterhofen in Lower Bavaria. From 1872 he completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor in Munich and graduated with a journeyman's examination. His entry into the Munich Art Academy is documented on October 16, 1878 , where he (presumably) trained as a sculptor with Wilhelm von Rümann , including in modeling and life drawing courses. He made trips to Nuremberg , Leipzig , Berlin and Cologne , then also to Brussels and Antwerp . In 1888 he acquired citizenship and homeland rights in Munich, married the Munich innkeeper's daughter Friederike Anna Neidlein and finally settled in Munich as a freelance sculptor. In 1899 he bought a home in Munich (Heßstrasse 35). The marriage had three children, Luise (* 1889), Elise Anna Konstantine (* 1891) and Johann Franz (* 1896), who died in October 1914 near Ypres.

Drexler was a member and exhibitor of the Munich Artists' Cooperative (MKG). In 1918 he was appointed Royal Professor. His hometown Osterhofen made him an honorary citizen and named the Professor Drexler Weg after him. The sculptor Julius Drexler, who was also born in Osterhofen and mainly works in Munich, was his nephew and student.

Drexler mainly worked in stone, more rarely in bronze, wood and ceramics. He prepared his designs with drawings, clay and plaster models. In 1889 he received a prize at the competition for the Wittelsbacherbrunnen and further recognitions for a peace memorial "From Great Times" (3rd prize, 1896) and fountains on Isartorplatz and Josefsplatz in Munich. He was also successful with his design for a Schiller monument in Nuremberg (1905). He received orders for busts and portraits as reliefs, architectural sculptures, the monumental sculpture of "Pallas Athene" (1906) and for the design of monuments, fountains, altarpieces as well as graves and plaques, among others for Cologne, Frankfurt am Main, Bonn, Mainz and Heilsberg in East Prussia. He showed drafts and small sculptures in bronze and ceramics (majolica) from 1903 at the latest on the occasion of the annual Munich exhibitions and, among other things, in the great art exhibition in Düsseldorf.
