Franz Fischlin (born November 3, 1962 in Bern ) is a Swiss journalist . He is the presenter of the main edition of the Tagesschau on Swiss television . Since November 2015 he has also moderated the industry-specific discussion program “ Medienclub ”.

life and career

After finishing high school, Fischlin trained as a photographer in his hometown of Solothurn . He then studied journalism and communication science at the University of Freiburg . He then worked as a presenter and editor for the former Radio Extrabern, as a producer, as a trainer and as a news presenter for the former Swiss private broadcaster TV3 for the Swiss Radio DRS . In 2000, Fischlin came to Swiss television and worked as a presenter and editor for MittagsMagazin and MittagsTalks . Since 2002 he has also worked in the editorial department of the Tagesschau . He initially moderated the midday edition until he took over the moderation of the main edition in February 2004 as the successor to Charles Clerc .

In 2011, Fischlin was the first media worker in the “Information” section to be named “Swiss TV Star of the Year” at the Swiss TV Prize.

For the Tagesschau series “Billing in the Bundeshaus”, Fischlin portrayed selected politicians in seven issues in order to take stock of the general election on October 18, 2015.

In 2015, Fischlin launched the industry-specific “Medienclub” program on Swiss television, which is broadcast four to six times a year. Through the program, he invites four industry experts and the audience to discuss in depth how the media work, how media products are created and how they affect society.

In addition to his position at Swiss television, Fischlin also moderates specialist conferences and panel discussions.

Fischlin is the 10vor10 presenter Susanne Wille married and the couple have two sons and a daughter. He has two daughters from a previous marriage.

engagement

Fischlin is a member of the CNN jury, is on the board of "Quality in Journalism" (Quajou) and co-founder of the journalists' foundation "investigate!".

In 2017, he founded the “YouNews - Swiss Youth Media Week” project together with industry colleagues Viviane Manz from Schweizer Fernsehen and Michael Marti from Tages-Anzeiger . The aim of the initiative is to sensitize young people to how established media contribute to opinion-forming in a democracy in times of fake news , chatbots or Instagram stories. The pupils should also work in the editorial offices themselves, so that they can learn from the professionals on the one hand and, on the other hand, from the young people. The youth media week took place for the second time from January 14 to 20, 2019 and, with a total of ten classes and 62 young people working in 15 German-speaking Swiss media, is many times larger than the first edition in January 2018.

Controversy

One edition of the “media club” was noticed by the lack of female guests. This was followed by criticism in the media, for example by the political scientist Regula Stämpfli , who described the program as a misconception. Fischlin explained that it would be difficult to find women who would like to expose themselves in his program, but promised to design an all-women group one day. In October, for the first time, more women than men were invited to a program on media use by young people.
