Gutmann emigrated to the USA in 1939 (he had previously examined the possibility of a job as a university professor on a trip), lost his German citizenship in 1941, and later became a US citizen. From 1939 until his retirement in 1949 Gutmann was Professor of Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He then continued to work as a lecturer in Milwaukee because he did not have sufficient income from his pension. Compensation payments from Germany were not made until 1956. Before that, his 65-year-old wife had to work in a department store. Gutmann never returned to Germany.
