Franz Heinrich Witthoefft (born November 19, 1863 in Kirchwerder ; † July 6, 1941 Lütjensee in the Trittau office ) was a wholesale merchant and Hamburg senator.

Life

After finishing school at Fritz Louis Nirrnheim's (1830–1906) high school in St. Georg, Witthoefft made a commercial apprenticeship. He then went from Hamburg to Antwerp for the export company Arnold Otto Meyer and from 1885 to Singapore for 16 years . From 1901 Witthoefft continued to work in Hamburg for Arnold Otto Meyer, of which he was a partner.

In the twenties Witthoefft became chairman of the supervisory board of Commerzbank and he was president of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce from 1919 to 1923 . From January 19, 1919 to May 21, 1920 Witthoefft was a member of the DVP in the Weimar National Assembly . In 1919 he became a member of the business association for the promotion of intellectual reconstruction forces , which provided the capital for the press empire of Alfred Hugenberg . From November 1924 until its dissolution in December 1933, Witthoefft was president of the Übersee-Club in Hamburg, which promoted free trade .

Witthoefft was a member of the Hamburg citizenship for his party throughout the Weimar Republic . From April 5, 1928 to September 15, 1931, Witthoefft was Senator in the Hamburg Senate as the successor to Max Schramm for the DVP. In 1931, during the economic crisis, the Hamburg Senate was reduced from 16 to 12 members and Witthoefft left the Senate again. He later became a member of the NSDAP .

In November 1932 he was one of the signatories of a petition from industrialists and bankers to Paul von Hindenburg calling for Hitler's chancellorship . In 1932 he became a member of the Keppler Circle, later the Friends of the Reichsführer SS .

He was a member of the supervisory board of C. Lorenz AG .
