Franz Hofmeister (born August 30, 1850 in Prague , † July 26, 1922 in Würzburg ) was a Bohemian biochemist .
life and work
Franz Hofmeister studied medicine at the University of Prague under Karl Hugo Huppert and completed his habilitation in 1879 on physiological aspects of digestive processes under Oswald Schmiedeberg . He received a professorship in Prague in 1885 and moved to Strasbourg University in 1896 . His successor in Prague was Julius Pohl .
Hofmeister's main focus was protein chemistry . At the meeting of German naturalists and doctors in Karlsbad in 1902, he was the first to propose, independently and simultaneously with Emil Fischer, a structure of proteins from amino acids with peptide bonds .
The Hofmeister series , which specifies the effect of ions on the water solubility of proteins , is named after him . This series is still important for the purification of peptides today.
