Franz Josef Sandmann , also Franz Xaver Josef Sandmann or Franz Xaver Sandmann , (born December 15, 1805 in Strasbourg , Alsace , † January 1, 1856 in Vienna ) was a Franco-German draftsman , lithographer and landscape painter .

Life

Sandmann was born in 1805 at Barbaragasse 3 in Strasbourg. The parents were the wine merchant Franz Xaver Sandmann and his wife Franziska Speiser.

From 1836 to 1839 Sandmann worked on lithographic view series from Alsace. He mainly created landscapes and vedutas , beginning with the "Vues des villes et bourgs ... de l'Alsace" (Strasbourg, 1836). His lithography series about the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Elbe Valley , Potsdam or the landscape around Zell am See became famous . In 1841 he went to Vienna and until 1850 lithographed views for albums published by the art publishers LT Neumann and Anton Paterno. He also delivered lithographs for the Josef Bermann publishing house after a trip to the Danube that Jakob Alt undertook between 1847 and 1849. In 1850 the series "Mahlerische Danube Journey from Engelharts-Zell to Vienna" was published based on Alt's original recordings. Around 1850, after a few drawings, the LT Neumann publishing house published lithographed, small-format views of the Danube by Sandmann that identify him as a draftsman. Franz Xaver Josef Sandmann lived in Vienna until his death. His artistic estate went to Josef Bermann.
