Franz König-Hollerwöger was born on December 1, 1914 in Gmunden as the son of Franz and Maria König-Hollerwöger. The father was a builder and carpenter in the second generation, the mother came from a long-established family of teachers from Laakirchen and was a sister of Karl Eder.
