Franz Kolb

Franz Kolb , also Franz Kolbius (* around 1465 in Inzlingen ; † November 10 or December 11, 1535 in Bern ) was a Reformed theologian and reformer .

Life

Kolb came to scholarly studies late. In 1491 he was enrolled in Basel , and in 1497 he obtained his master's degree there . After he had been a teacher at the St. Martin School in Basel until 1502 , he was called to Freiburg im Üechtland in March 1504 , where he worked as preacher and rector of the St. Nikolaus School . In 1505 he worked briefly as a preacher in Murten . In 1507 he accompanied Swiss mercenaries to Italy as a field preacher , but on his return made such derogatory comments about the “ traveling ” that he aroused strong offense in influential circles in both Friborg and Bern . In 1509 Kolb went to Bern and in 1512 he left the St. Vincenzenmünster in Bern again and went to the Carthusian monastery in Nuremberg , which he left at the end of 1522. Only when the Reformation movement spread under the influence of the town clerk Lazarus Spengler and the preacher Andreas Osiander did he also appear as a preacher. Nothing is known about its inner transformation. His radical Lutheran attitude was noticed.

At the request of the papal legate Chieregati, who was in Nuremberg for the Reichstag in 1522, he had to leave the field. In 1522 he had a canon position in Bern, which he had to leave because of his violent sermons against abuse and immorality in the church. Where he turned remains uncertain. Perhaps he met Martin Luther, who recommended him to Count Georg von Wertheim as a preacher, so that he saw another field of activity in front of him. In an informative letter dated August 27, 1524, he told Luther about the reforms he had carried out in the worship service and asked for further advice. However, this letter already indicates his inclination for the Zwinglian conception of the Lord 's Supper .

On behalf of the count, he also wrote a confessional "Wertheimer Ratschlag" in 1524. Because of his compelling opinion, however, he could not stay in Wertheim or Nuremberg. In Nuremberg it was suspected that he had a connection with the Anabaptists and he had to undergo a faith interrogation. Therefore he turned back to Switzerland , visited Ulrich Zwingli and then worked in Bern as Berchtold Haller's assistant from 1527 . When the great Bern disputation was held in January 1528 , he played a decisive role in it. In 1530/1531 Kolb was involved in the fight against the Anabaptists in Bern. In 1531 Kolb accompanied the Bernese troops as a field preacher in the Second Kappel War . Since he made himself unpopular with the military with his sermons, he soon left the troops. At the age of 70 he gave up his post for health reasons and died in the same year.
