Franz Kupelwieser (born September 14, 1830 in Vienna , † August 5, 1903 in Pörtschach am Wörther See ) was an Austrian mining specialist .

Life

The montanist Franz Kupelwieser is a son of the painter Leopold Kupelwieser and was born in Vienna on September 14, 1830 . There he also attended high school. Since the young man was interested in mining, he attended a two-year specialist course at the Montanlehranstalt in Leoben in 1850 . Kupelwieser stayed at this training center until 1856. He was 26 years old when he went to the Banat as a smelter and chief engineer . In the following years he founded the household with the noblewoman Elli Abbot von Apaty . In 1862, Kupelwieser ended his employment at the Reschitza ironworks because he had received an appointment at what is now the mining academy in Leoben. The 32-year-old was appointed head metallurgical master and subsequently taught metallurgy as a lecturer . In 1866 he took over the lectures in metallurgy. The professor quickly made a name for himself in specialist circles and appeared as a reporter and juror at the world exhibitions. We find him at the exhibitions in Vienna (1873), Philadelphia (1876), Paris (1878), Trieste (1882) and Antwerp (1885).

When and for what reason the family settled in Pörtschach am Wörther See could not be determined. The daughter Marie had meanwhile married the later Oberbergrat and Hofrat Max Arbesser von Rastburg and had died in 1879 with the girl Eleonore and in 1881 with the son Karl.

The professor was one of the most respected villa owners and sat on the spa committee, which was the successor to the local beautification association. The spa doctor Alfred Leopold (September 16, 1852 - September 21, 1933), who was one of the pioneers of the tourism industry, published a souvenir booklet in 1908 in which he stated: "The latter (the most respected villa owners) also took part in the compilation of the community committee, which at the time of its heyday names like Se. Your Excellency Ladislaus Graf Hoyos (the Elder) ... Councilor Professor Franz Kupelwieser ... belonged who excelled in the most praiseworthy health care committee. "

In the academic years 1875/76 and 1876/77, Kupelwieser was director of the school. After the rector's constitution was introduced, Franz Kupelwieser became the first elected rector in Leoben in 1895 . In the second half of the 1890s, Kupelwieser sat on the Reichsrat as a representative of the Leoben Chamber of Commerce , of which he was a part-time secretary . He belonged to the German progressive party. He retired before the turn of the century. He had only four years left. In October 1902 he lost his wife. She was buried in the new Pörtschach local cemetery, which was laid out in a hollow. Franz Kupelwieser followed her in death on August 5, 1903, at the age of 72; he was laid to rest at his wife's side.

The family crypt occupies the highest point of the site and is one of the great tombs of the Garden of Tranquility. The son of the same name, Franz Kupelwieser d. J. was the ironworks director when his parents died. His sister Marie, born on March 10, 1859, died on November 21, 1909, her husband, Max Arbesser von Rastburg, born on May 15, 1851, on February 21, 1931. His ancestors were ennobled in 1817. The two son Karl Arbesser von Rastburg , born on May 26, 1881, was a corvette captain and died on March 5, 1920. His sister Eleonore (January 1, 1879 - November 4, 1953) married the district captain and later vice-president of the Lieutenancy, Oskar Lobmeyr (23. September 1864 - April 21, 1944), who was ennobled in 1916 with the title von Hohenleiten. The couple spent their twilight years in Pörtschach am Wörther See . Son Max Lobmeyr von Hohenleiten was born on June 13, 1898 in Vienna and died as a senior building officer on January 23, 1960 in Pörtschach am Wörther See.
